Lawn Aeration & Overseeding

Fall is the best time to aerate your lawn. We don't advise aerating in the spring because we are then creating thousands of vulnerabilities for weeds to take advantage of with open dirt and plugs. In the fall, weeds are less likely to take advantage of these vulnerabilities in the open soil, and the grass still has enough season to close the gaps and let the plugs from the soil disperse. Spring also isn't ideal if you aerate and overseed because you wouldn't be able to do a pre emergent in the spring without killing the grass seed.

To have a great looking lawn we recommend each fall. Spring and fall is excessive unless you recently had construction causing compaction. Best way to keep weeds out is a thick, healthy lawn. Compaction will inhibit a healthy grass and is a more condusive environment for crab grass and other weeds. Aerating each season will reduce compaction thus creating better soil health for grass and lessening weeds. 

Yes, atleast once every few years if your lawn is already thick and healthy and your satisfied with how it looks. If you have a thin lawn, or are struggling with weeds - overseed. Its the best option to get better lawn results faster. We recommend atleast every few years even if your yard is perfect because grass ages so having newer, younger grass plants mixed in will create a better, healthy, disease resistant lawn. Also its good to overseed because it can repair from fungis/mold damage. Lastly, new seed varieties will result in a younger and healthier plant thus fighting off fungis and disease better.

August - september is the best time. You will need to water as we typically don't get much rain, but its by far the best time to overseed or plant grass. In the spring, weeds grow faster than grass and will choke out newly planted grass. Unless you have areas larger than 1' x 1', you'd rather have pre emergent down and have weed protection than grass seed (pre emergent in spring will keep grass seed from germinating). Summer crab grass will outcompete regular grass so don't plant then. But in late summer, early fall, our grass will grow faster and out compete the weeds. This will get more bang for your buck of grass seed and give you better results.
